# Herdenking Poolse gesneuvelden WOII

Vandaag werden in onze stad de Poolse militairen herdacht die tijdens de bevrijding van ons land in 1944 en 1945 het leven lieten. De jaarlijkse herdenkingsplechtigheid vond naar goede gewoonte plaats in twee etappes, nl. eerst een misviering in de kerk van het centrum, gevolgd door een kransenneerlegging aldaar, en een tweede etappe aan de Poolse Militaire Begraafplaats op de Luikersteenweg.

De 1 hectare grote Poolse Militaire Begraafplaats in Lommel is de enige in België. Hier liggen 257 Poolse soldaten begraven, die gevochten hebben bij de 1ste Poolse Pantserdivisie onder bevel van brigadegeneraal S. Macziek. Vermoedelijk een 25-tal Poolse soldaten die hier begraven liggen behoorden tot de Poolse squadrons van de Royal Air Force.

Tussen de landing in Normandië in augustus 1944 en de aankomst in de Duitse havenstad Willemshaven had deze 1ste divisie een negen maanden durende veldtocht van circa 1.800 km. achter de rug. De divisie verloor 1.288 mensen. Alleen al in België sneuvelden zowat 500 Poolse soldaten, waarvan er dus ruim de helft begraven liggen in Lommel.
